South Catamount Dam Rehabilitation Project

South Catamount Reservoir is undergoing rehabilitation of its dam, which will impact some recreation activities in the area. The work will last through 2025.

South Catamount is one of three reservoirs owned and operated by Colorado Springs Utilities in the North Slope Recreation Area (NSRA) of Pikes Peak. The dam structure, constructed in 1936, requires a major rehabilitation project to enhance its safety and performance. Project work includes resurfacing of the dam's steel face and replacement of infrastructure in and around the dam.

We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as we complete the necessary maintenance and improvements to a critical reservoir that stores drinking water for our community. The work will preserve and extend the life of the dam for decades to come.

What to expect during construction

  • South Catamount Reservoir is drawn down and closed to the public for the 2024-2025 NSRA seasons.
  • Work began October 2023. The reservoir is scheduled to re-open to the public in May 2026.
  • North Catamount Reservoir remains open to the public via hike-in access from the Catamount Recreation Area Trailhead, Teller County (Edlowe Road).

    • Some trail sections near both reservoirs are closed for construction safety. See map
    • NOTE: No trails in the NSRA are open to the public when the NSRA is closed. The NSRA opens May 1 and closes the third weekend of October.
  • Due to construction activity, vehicle access to North Catamount Reservoir from Pikes Peak Highway is not available.
  • Crystal Creek Reservoir remains open to the public for recreation during the 2024-2025 NSRA seasons.
  • Permits for commercially guided activities in the NSRA are not available for the 2024-2025 season.

The multiple complexities of the rehabilitation project include not only the type of work being conducted, but also the challenges of working in mountain terrain with limited maneuverability and under volatile weather conditions. It is necessary to create safety perimeters around the lowered reservoir and construction work zones. For your safety, please respect posted signs that prohibit foot and vehicle traffic in the area.

We encourage you to explore other recreational opportunities in the region while we are working on the reservoir.

Recreational uses of the reservoirs in the NSRA, including South Catamount, are managed by Pikes Peak America’s Mountain, an enterprise of the City of Colorado Springs.
